Case Study

Grant to Greens Norton CE Primary School

Background

The curriculum that we provide our pupils with was praised by inspectors during our OFSTED visit at the start of the academic year and we always try hard to make activities relevant, exciting and hands on.  Our school staff are wonderful but it is always good to have experts in school to enrich our own provision in certain areas of the curriculum.

Specific needs

The challenge is always balancing the budget and, whilst our own fundraising through events at school can subsidise trips and equipment, visitors to school to enhance Science, History, Music, Drama and a range of other subjects can be an expensive luxury that we simply cannot afford.

The Grant Process

The new Village Trust made the process of grant application really easy.  We shared details of the type of visitors we would like to book and explained how these workshops and experiences would enhance the learning for our pupils, helping to make it memorable and engaging for them.

The grant we needed fell within the £5,000 maximum and our need was clear.

Outcomes

Over the last few months, we have welcomed a theatre group to do some drama work with our Year 5 class based on developing friendships, a historian to show our Year 1 children a range of toys from Victorian times and work with them to make their own toys and a scientist who astonished our Year 3 pupils with some very exciting (and funny!) experiments linked to their work on Forces and Magnets.  Before the end of term we will have had visits from park rangers from a local outdoor centre to run a Forest School day for our Reception class in our own woodland area, some musicians to run an African drumming workshop for Year 2 linked to their Geography work and historians  to provide an interactive Viking day for Year 4 and a Mayan day for Year 6.  All of these experiences will have benefited the children, not only through knowledge but also enhancing their teamwork, collaboration, perseverance and confidence too.
